TO USE SPACER

  1. Remove the cap from the mouthpiece of the metered dose inhaler (MDI).

  2. Shake the MDI immediately before each use. Insert the inhaler mouthpiece into the MDI adaptor.

  3. For spacer with facemask:
    Apply the facemask to face ensuring a good seal over the nose and mouth.

    For spacer with mouthpiece:
    Take the spacer mouthpiece cap off. Put the spacer mouthpiece between your teeth and close your lips around it to ensure an effective seal.

    The movement of inspiratory flow indicator during inhalation indicates a good seal is created.

  4. Administer one puff at a time. Press the MDI once at the beginning of a slow inhalation as the inspiratory flow indicator moves. Use the inspiratory flow indicator to count breaths, maintain the seal for 5 to 6 breaths.

  5. Repeat steps 2 to 4 for each puff ordered by your doctor. Wait about 30 seconds between puffs.
 

CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

  1. To dissemble the spacer, remove the MDI adaptor from the back of the device, then twist the chamber to detach the facemask or mouthpiece and open the mouthpiece cap (if applicable).

  2. Soak the parts for 15 minutes in a mild solution of liquid dish detergent and lukewarm clean water. Agitate gently and rinse parts in clean water.
  3. Shake out excess water and allow to air dry in a vertical position at room temperature.
    Do not use a towel to dry as this may cause static.

  4. To reassemble the parts, twist firmly until securely locked into position.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION 

  • If the MDI contains a corticosteroid, rinse your mouth after use with water and wipe your face with a wet towel if using a spacer with facemask.
  • Stand or sit upright, and hold the MDI upright when using it.
  • Press MDI soon after beginning of inhalation to prevent the medication from falling to the bottom of the spacer.
  • Clean the spacer once weekly.
  • When you notice medication build-up in the chamber, wash the inside of the chamber gently with a soft cloth.
