Private Healthcare Sector’s First Green Charter in Hong Kong
Matilda International Hospital officially launched a Green Charter in the presence of Fong Kin-wa, Assistant Director (Waste Reduction and Recycling) of Environmental Protection Department of Hong Kong SAR Government, and the hospital staff on 14 August 2018. The Matilda Green Charter, the first in the private healthcare sector in Hong Kong, outlines the hospital’s commitment to promoting green initiatives and creating a positive impact on the environment.

Fong Kin-wa, Assistant Director (Waste Reduction and Recycling) of Environmental Protection Department fully supported the launch of the Green Charter and said at the launch ceremony, “It is my great pleasure to join you here today for the launching of the Green Charter. This Charter demonstrates your commitment towards the betterment of our environment. To live up to the commitment in the Charter, I understand the Hospital has adopted a number of new initiatives with encouraging results. Your exemplary efforts mean a lot to not only the environmental sector but also the medical care field.
“We hope to elicit your continued support to lead by example and collaborate with your partners, including us, in cultivating a “use less, waste less” culture.,” he continues.
The hospital has 12 Green Ambassadors from both clinical and non-clinical departments to plan, implement and promote green initiatives. Some green projects that have been started include setting up of recycle collection spots within departments, recycling used oil, internal training, as well as removing plastic straws and plastic bags for staff meals. Glass food containers and a reusable bag were presented as gifts to all staff which they are encouraged to use as lunch boxes, for the salad bar and at hospital events.
Moving forward, we will organise green booth games, a dress green day, environmental workshops, among many others activities where we can work together to reduce our environmental footprint.
"Fong Kin-wa visited our Nature’s Super Food booth at hospital in which we serve ant cookies, cricket pasta, cricket fruit bars and edible silkworms which are high in protein. The Nature’s Super Food Day is one of our green initiatives for staff to experience new sustainable nutritious food sources."
