Patient rights & responsibilities

Matilda is committed to provide personalised health and wellness to every patient. Our patients have the following rights and responsibilities regardless of gender, language, ethnicity, religion, physical conditions or socioeconomic status. We also recognize  the rights of the child to receive healthcare at the hospital.

The relationship between medical personnel and patients is one that is close, interdependent and about trust.

RIGHTS

1. Right to privacy and confidentiality

  • The dignity, culture and religious belief of a patient should be respected.
  • Without your prior consent for disclosure, any information obtained during the process or management of your illness should be kept confidential by all medical personnel.
  • However, in order to help the management of the illness, doctors may disclose this information to other relevant medical personnel.

2. Right to know

  • Medical fees or charges in advance.
  • Details of your illness, including diagnosis, progress, investigations, methods and effectiveness of treatments.
  • The name, dosage, method of administration, use and side effects of the prescribed medications.
  • The purposes and common complications of any treatment, procedures or investigations before they are performed, and whether there are any other alternatives.

3. Right to decide

  • To consult more than one doctor before making a decision to accept any treatment.
  • Whether to accept or refuse any medical advice, investigations and treatment. If you decide to refuse the suggestions from doctors, you should understand the consequences of your decision and be responsible for it.
  • Whether or not to participate in medical research.

4. Right to complain

  • The right to make a complaint through channels provided for this purpose, and to have any complaint dealt with promptly and fairly.

5. Right to obtain personal health record

  • The right to obtain a copy of the personal medical record from the hospital after applying and paying the respective processing charges stipulated in hospital policy.

 

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To provide full information about your present illness, past medical history and other relevant information.
  • To inform us for any changes of your personal record and if any information on your health record is inaccurate.
  • To cooperate with medical personnel on any mutually agreed treatment plan or procedure and to arrive for your appointment on time.
  • To not ask medical personnel to provide false medical information, to issue false receipts, sick leave certificates or medical reports.
  • To be aware of medical costs prior to admission.
  • To follow the rules stipulated by the hospital or clinics and respect the rights of others patients and medical personnel. Violent acts or causing a nuisance could result in the hospital suspending your access to services.

Charter for Children in Hospital

  1. Children shall be admitted to hospital only if the care they require cannot be equally well provided at home or on a day basis. 
  2. Children in hospital shall have the right to have their parents or parent substitute with them at all times.
    1. Accommodation should be offered to all parents and they should be helped and encouraged to stay.
    2. Parents should not need to incur additional costs or suffer loss of income.
    3. In order to share in the care of their child, parents should be kept informed about ward routine and their active participation encouraged.
    1. Children and parents shall have the right to be informed in a manner appropriate to age and understanding.
    2. Steps should be taken to mitigate physical and emotional stress.
    1. Children and parents have the right to informed participation in all decisions involving their health care.
    2. Every child shall be protected from unnecessary medical treatment and investigation.
    1. Children shall be cared for together with children who have the same developmental needs and shall not be admitted to adult wards.
    2. There should be no age restrictions for visitors to children in hospital.
  3. Children shall have full opportunity for play, recreation and education suited to their age and condition and shall be in an environment designed, furnished, staffed and equipped to meet their needs.
  4. Children shall be cared for by staff whose training and skills enable them to respond to the physical, emotional and developmental needs of children and families.
  5. Continuity of care should be ensured by the team caring for children.
  6. Children shall be treated with tact and understanding and their privacy shall be respected at all times.
